Portfolio Practise: Mid Century

Dug out my Faber Castell PITT brush pen today and took some inspiration from my Grandfather’s pottery work. He co-founded the Milton Head Pottery in Brixham, Devon in 1950 and it produced these beautiful examples of mid-century design. I trying to push myself more towards this looser, more informal line work which must be lying dormant within me somewhere seeing as it’s in my genes. All these pictures have been borrowed from the Milton Head Pottery Facebook page, maintained by my Mum! If you love mid-20th Century design do take a look and check out the photos for an idea of the work they produced. I love it all, but of course I’m biased.

I love the decorative lines, the colours and the subject matter – typically mid-20th Century – so incorporated these and added some lemons to add a domestic feel to the illustration:

This is a nice start to what could be a lovely little illustration once coloured and tidied up. A homage to my creative heritage too.
