It’s day 1 of week 1 of Module 1 of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design Online Course! I’m really excited to be signed up and am wishing my coffers were full so I could do all three modules. We’ve been set a small optional exercise to start us on this week’s theme of Inspiration, to make a quick and simple pattern using very basic supplies. I have this pile of washi tape that has languished in my desk drawer and grabbed a trusty black pen. I used a piece of postcard-sized card, picked my colours and came up with this!
It took 10 minutes and was a great way to stop me from stressing over perfection, or even how to start which always stumps me. I have a real problem with loosening up!
Elements I really like are the blobs on the green that look almost like skyscrapers, the scribbly dots on the yellow and the lines drawn over the pink chevron stripes; the juxtaposition of ruler-straight stripes with the wobbly hand drawn line pleases my eye. The gold tape hasn’t come through so well in the scan but in the flesh it looks really pretty next to the flat planes of colour.
Such a small and quick exercise but I am already embracing the more ‘hand-drawn’ elements, something I tend to love in patterns I buy or admire but never explore myself. Result!
